It is Thursday: Trivia day!

As I promised last week, when I published the question: "What do Bobby Fischer and Barbra Streisand have in common?", here I am with the answer. As you have already mentioned: Poekie (wikipedia), Brother in law (jewish origin) and Brian (same Erasmus Highschool), that's the correct answer. They both have a jewish origin, although Fischer made occasional hostile comments towards Jews from at least the early 1960s, and they both finished the same Erasmus Highschool in New York.
What you maybe don't know:
Raymond Weinstein (born 25 april, 1941), International Fide Master (title awarded in 1962), attented the same Erasmus Highschool, where he was two grades ahead of Bobby Fischer. Weinstein defeated many top players such as: Reshevsky, Pal Benko, Arthur Bisguier and Robert Byrne, drew with Fischer, but his best result came in 1960-61. He finished 3rd in the US Championship, after Fischer and Lombardy, which gave him the opportunity to play in the Interzonal Tournament, held in Stockholm 1962, though neither he nor Lombardy played.
He had a degree in Psychology, was fluent in many languages and had a very good memory. He travelled to Amsterdam to take his master degree, where he was arrested for assault. Dutch chess author Tim Krabbe has identified the victim as the Dutch psychology professor and International Master Johan Barendregt. Because of this incident he was deported back to United States.
In 1964 he killed an 83-year old man in a nursing home with a razor. Raymond went to trial and was judged menatlly ill. He was confined to a psychiatric hospital in Manhattan's Ward Island, where he remains to this day.

Now, today's Trivia question! Name, from left to right, the five chess personalities you recognize in the following picture:

Bonus question: During which tournament was the picture taken?

  1. Trivia Question: Name, from left to right, the five chess personalities you recognize in the following picture:

Of the five famous chess players in that picture I've actually met four of them! ;) The one on the extreme left was quite fortunate to have a signed edition of his famous trilogy (long story how I came about it). Anyhoo, here are the images saved from on my Photobucket account (just 'paste & copy' onto a web browser).

I'm sure you must know this famous book!

Or, should I just say 'TOM I'? (*grin*)

The above images are, of course, from the 3 volume set TOM I, II & III (1965-1968) from the books: "The Chess Creativity of Botvinnik" by Victor Baturinsky. The true story of how I got that book with Botvinnik's personal inscription I'll save for a later time... I'll just say this it was given to me as a gift (specifically 'TOM I' as I already had an unsigned copy at the time) by a very close friend who also just happened to be a Grandmaster and he had all the right connections. :)

Here's another charming story for you and Erwin which I know positively you'll both understand immediately! :P My dear old dear friend IM Julio Kaplan (World Junior Chess Champion 1967-1968) in which we were having a short telephone conversation and it went something like this...

    Me: 'Hi Julio!'

Julio: 'Hey Al - what's you doing?'

Me: 'Oh nothing much I'm just going over a Botvinnik game.'

Julio: 'Cool! - how's that going?'

Me: 'I'm on my third day!'

    Julio: '~lol~'

Of all the Great Chess Masters that I've studied Mikhail Botvinnik was the deepest with his profound strategical concepts! (*deep grin ensues*)

The second player too (from the left) I have many autographs and books signed by him and here's a cute story for you (the ultra short version of my wonderful encounter):

When Dr. Max Euwe signed my chess books (this one quite famous by Tartakower on the Alekhine vs. Euwe 1935 WCC match), I thought it just rare enough (I saved it for last after he signed all the other ones) to say, "I bet you haven't seen one of these in awhile?" To which he quickly answered (with a big grin of a smile on his face), "The second one today!" ~lol~ I'll never forget that... Then he asked: "Where would you like me to sign it?" I responded with, "Anywhere you like." He browsed through the book once again and fell upon the famous picture on page seven. He then said: "That's a famous one (referring to the Rembrant picture in the background), I think I'll sign it there." I just smiled... :-)))

Bonus question: During which tournament was the picture taken?

That's too easy for me! ~lol~ (*wink*)

I could go on and on and tell you more about my encounters with Max, Vasily, Paul and Sammy... Suffice it to say all my wonderful Chess stories I'll have written in good time so all can read and enjoy them -- hopefully soon! :D

PS: The seventh player from the left (wearing glasses & buttons showing on his vest) is also quite famous (hint: he's one of the original Grandmasters appointed by the FIDE General Assembly in 1951).

  3. there’s little that can be done for the back end of the defense. One of the young cornerbacks, or perhaps all of them, will have to mature quickly to fill massive shoes. That’s what Carolina had in mind when it plucked corners with its second-, third- and fifth-round picks in the draft. And the franchise is also banking on some development from players who were already in the fold when Norman departed.nfl sports flags,Baltimore Ravens flags usa,Detroit Lions flags
